A regular squishy springs back the instant you let go. A slow-rise squishy takes about three to five seconds to return to shape, which is the effect most people are actually after. The difference is the foam: slow-risers use open-cell memory foam, regular squishies use a denser closed-cell foam or foam beads. Slow-risers cost more and are worth it if the point is the sensory feel.
Most squishies are labelled for ages three and up, and that lower bound is real: a squishy that splits releases foam beads or foam crumbs that are a choking hazard. Kids five and up can generally use them unsupervised. For under-threes, choose a one-piece sensory toy that is rated for that age instead.
