Start Shopping ↑Three things: a base, an activator, and something to mix in. The base is usually white PVA school glue. The activator is contact lens solution with boric acid plus a pinch of baking soda, or liquid starch, or a dilute borax solution. After that it is colour, glitter, foam beads, or instant snow depending on the texture you want.
Water beads need real caution and are not a toy for young children. They are made to absorb many times their volume in liquid, so a swallowed bead keeps expanding inside the body, where it does not show up on a standard X-ray. They have caused serious injuries and have been the subject of recalls and safety warnings. Keep them away from anyone under five and from pets, use them only with an adult present, and count them back into the container when play is over. Treat a suspected swallowed bead as an emergency and call for medical help straight away.
Sodium polyacrylate, the same super-absorbent polymer used in nappies. It arrives as a dry powder and expands roughly a hundred times when water is added, which is where the effect comes from.
It is non-toxic in the sense that it is not poisonous, but it should not be eaten or inhaled. The dry powder is fine enough to irritate airways, so add the water before kids get close and mix it outside or over a sink. It is the same polymer family as water beads, so the same rule applies: not for under-threes, and adult supervision throughout.
A large, thin-walled inflatable ball that behaves more like a giant bubble than a beach ball. It squashes almost flat and springs back, which is why it appears in sensory play as often as it does in the garden. Inflate it with the pump it ships with rather than a compressor, and keep it off gravel and rough concrete.
Fully hydrated, about a week in a sealed container before they start to break down and grow bacteria. Dried back out on a tray, the same beads rehydrate several times. Once any bead looks cloudy, slimy, or has split, the whole batch goes in the bin, not down the drain, where they swell and block the trap.
