The foam cells have collapsed from repeated squeezing, and that is permanent. Slow-rise foam works because air moves back through open cells at a controlled rate. Once those cell walls tear, the piece snaps back like ordinary foam. Heat and sunlight speed it up, so a squishy left on a car dash or a windowsill will lose its rise months before one kept in a drawer. There is no way to restore it.
Wipe the outside only, with a barely damp cloth and no soap, then let it air dry away from heat. Do not soak it and do not put it in a washing machine. The foam absorbs water, holds it deep inside, and grows mildew you cannot see or reach. If the stickiness is the coating breaking down rather than surface grime, wiping will not fix it and the piece is at the end of its life.
Check the tag first: authentic iBloom pieces carry a printed tag with a scannable authentication code, and the tag stitching is clean rather than glued. Then check the scent, which on a real piece is baked into the foam and survives years, while fakes are sprayed and fade in weeks. Fakes also tend to have blurry printed details around the eyes and a rise time under three seconds. Our rarity guide walks through all five checks.
Molds are the better first purchase. A machine mainly automates filling and adds heat, which matters when you are making a dozen at a time or working with balloon shells. For a kid making two or three squishies on a Saturday, a mold kit gets the same result for a fraction of the cost and there is nothing to plug in. Buy the machine after the mold kit has been used up, not before.
No. Water beads expand after they are swallowed, they do not show up on a standard X-ray, and they have caused serious internal injuries in small children. We do not recommend them for anyone under five, and for older kids they should only be used with an adult in the room. Instant snow is the safer swap for that age and gives the same sensory payoff.
About one to two weeks in a sealed airtight container at room temperature. You will know it has turned when it smells sour, develops pink or grey specks, or goes permanently watery instead of stretchy. Slime made with shaving foam breaks down fastest. Throw it out at the first off smell rather than trying to revive it with more activator.
No. Yellowing is oxidation of the polyurethane itself, not dirt sitting on the surface, so bleaching or scrubbing only damages the coating and makes it worse. It comes from UV light and from air, which is why white and pastel pieces go first. Collectors price yellowed pieces well below clean ones, and it is one of the fastest ways to date a vintage squishy.
